SENSITISED &SENTIMENTAL, a solo exhibition by Melissa Spratt, 2024.

Melissa is best known for her finger-knitted artworks which respond to her lived experience of being a highly sensitive person (HSP).

Melissa Spratt is a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP). A trait identified in 1996 by psychologist Elaine Aron, HSP's experience extra-ordinary bodily and emotional responses to a variety of emotional and sensory stimuli. In SENSITISED & SENTIMENTAL Spratt uses wool, a fibre which can both soothe and irritate, to elucidate the experience of being a HSP. Each work is laboriously constructed from lengths of finger-knitted wool. Shying away from the comforting connotations of textiles, Spratt instead uses texture, text and colour to explain her experience. In bold capitals and high value colours, Spratt shares short statements and longer, stream of consciousness style phrases conveying the flood of emotions and thoughts she endures as a HSP, these nuanced works capturing the dynamic nature of the senses — Summary written by Bree Di Mattina

All 20 artworks in this exhibition are now for the first time available for purchase through the Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olly Art Centre until November 17th 2024.

Please contact the gallery directly for further sales information.

SOLD - FUTURES MAP

Finger-knitted wool on water resistant backing. 100cm x 100cm

This artwork was the feature piece for the 2019 Gold Coast City Futures Forum exhibition at The Walls Art Space, which was curated by myself and hosted by Relative Creative in Burleigh, Gold Coast, QLD. This is a finger-knitted rug or wall hanging made of 100% wool, sourced from and hand-dyed by artist Bec Andersen on Mt Tamborine. The symbols within this artwork are derived from the See Change Sand Tracks 2018 Commonwealth Games activation by Relative Creative. They have been given another life in this Futures Map to open discussion about just transitions into a greener future.
